SuperFriends the Lost Episodes

I saw at Superman Homepage and here that on August 11th the SuperFriends Lost episodes will be for sale.
During the 1982-1983 season, ABC continued to run a half-hour long show entitled The Best of the Superfriends. This show consisted of reruns of shows from the previous nine seasons. These episodes were mostly half-hour long episodes (not shorts) featuring the core group of five Superfriends. By the time the 1983-1984 season rolled around, older Superfriends series were well into sydication, and could be viewed on weekday afternoons. Therefore in its ultimate stupidity, ABC decided to drop the Superfriends from the 1983-1984 Saturday morning television line-up. However, during this time Hanna-Barbera continued to produce new episodes of the Superfriends. In fact, 24 of these so-called "Lost Episodes" were animated but not aired in the United States that season. Three of these episodes were aired when the Superfriends returned to Saturday morning ABC television the following year. The remainder of the episodes finally aired in syndication years later as part of the Superman/Batman Adventures.

They are available for pre-order on July 7th.

Corporate Heroes

We all know that the big guns like Superman, Batman, Spider-man, Captain America etc. not only fight crime but can get advertising jobs to make ends meet. However, some heroes don't have enough crime in their areas. So some become corporate spokespersons. However I am afraid in these tough economic times these heroes may have lost their jobs as I haven't seen them in a long time. Here are a few that are missed.

Frank Miller's The Spirit

For years I hoped they would make a movie or TV series out of The Spirit. Finally comic book writer and artist Frank Miller made it one of his projects when he became a movie director. I thought this will be great. When I read his comic books I always thought they looked more like movies in the film noir vein. When it came to theaters I thought I would see it but I kept reading mixed reviews. So I held off. Recently I got it from the library. When I saw it I was underwelmed and thankful that I got it for free from the library.
The movie is in color but in most scenes you can hardly tell. Miller can't seem to make up his mind if he is filming the story in present day or the 1940's. I would have prefered the 1940's. The endless beatings he takes are in there and that is mostly what the movie is about. The Octopus injected him with a chemical when he died that made him immortal. It was a test by the Octopus to see if it worked. Then Octopus would use it on him. Speaking of the Octopus, only Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson as Silken Floss seem to be enjoying their parts in the movie. Also I did enjoy some of the comic book referances. Young Denny Colt reading an EC horro comic book was good. I liked seeing one of the delivery trucks named Ditko's but why not name them Eisner's deliveries. The Spirit in this movie was shocaced as a Ladies Man. I never had that impression of him. Ellen was always his lady. He was just so good looking that other women seemed to always fall at his feet. In the movie he was always coming on to them. Even in front of Ellen. In short I think Mr. Miller's vision of the Spirit could have been better.

Menomonee Falls Gazette Ad

Here is an ad for a newspaper that appeared in DC Comics back around 1974. I thought this was pretty amazing to see an ad for what seemed like a small town local newspaper in a nationwide comic book. I wondered why others didn't do something like this to bump up their subscribers. Then I learned that it was a publication that only reprinted old comic strips. The Gazette published adventure strips while their sister publication, the Guardian, published humor strips. The Gazette ran from 1972 to 1978 and had 232 issues.

The Flash:Rebirth

I almost didn't buy this book. I know it sounds funny as I have said here before how I couldn't wait for it to come out. Now it was here and guess what. I was short on cash. Couldn't even afford $4 to pay for anything. I thought that's fine. I'll just wait till they release this mini-series in trade paperback. Maybe I'll get it as a Christmas or birthday gift.
Then I thought I can't wait that long. I had read the Barry Allen version of the Flash since the 60's. When Carmine Infantino came back to the book it was when Carey Bates was at the hight of his writing powers. It was the one book that during my toughest years in college I made time to buy and read when I had to stop reading others. Yes I had to be at Barry Allen's coming back party. So I searched around till I came up with the $4 plus tax and bought it.
The story was wonderful and so was the art. It showed how the world had changed so much for both better and worse since Barry left. It starts with a brutal murder taking place in Central City Police HQ. The old Rogues gallery starts to rev up their engines to get back into action. Parties by his friends, crime fighters and civilians, are getting set up for his comeback. Most are happy as they all owe Barry a lot for the lives they now lead. Bart Allen is the one exception as he feels Wally should be the Flash. He also wonders why only Barry made it back from the Speed Force. Iris also prepares for their life together again and how to explain to the world that Barry didn't die. That may be taken care of for her as Capt. Frye from the police calls. He knows Barry has returned and needs his help.
Meanwhile. Barry has visited the Flash Museum. He sees Dexter Myles giving a tour. He meets up with Hal Jordan. He should know a thing on how to come back. Hal is thankful that Barry was away during his Parallax phase and I wish I was too.
I just had to show the photo below as they one time used the Batman team-up title as a mini-series to show team-ups of Flash with GL. This was an obvious tip of the hat to that series.

On the same page Barry wonders, like Bart, why he is back from the Speed Force.

I can give you one reason Barry. Comic book sales are low. So just like your first appearance in Showcase Comics started the silver age of comics they are hoping that your reappearance will jump start this new age of comics. I hope it does.

DC Hero Checks

Recently I got these checks at Designer Checks.com that I first saw on Rob's Aquaman Site. I paid some bills with them this week. One bill was due on 4/4/09. I went to my banks site and saw that while I mailed it on 3/31/09 the check cleared on 4/1/09. There are other heroes on the checks and they are Superman, Aquaman and Batman. It seems ironic that I used the Flash check and it got there the next day. Let's hear it for the fastet check cashed.
