We are having a double celebration today as it is my birthday and the second anniversary of my site Mail It To Team Up. Come on in and have a good time. Luke of El Jacone's Comic Book Bunker and Being Carter Hall is taking the coats and hats. Passing out the soft drinks is Brian of Comics in Crisis. Taking care of the tunes is Kent of Forgotten Hits. "Hey Kent! Make sure you play some Monkees songs." Taking care of the grill is Robby Reed of Dial B For Blog and right now he is talking to Adama of Dispatches From The Arrowcave and Paul of Comicbook World. Rob is making like Aquaman out back in the pool. In the family room Marty of the Ephemera site is watching some old movies. Out by the garage John of Pop Culture Safari is tossing horse shoes with David of Superman Fan.Net, Protos of Superhero CD and Jon of Random Acts of Geekery. Well here comes my wife with the cake. So everyone have a piece and enjoy yourself. Here is to another year of blogging fun.

Crisis on Earth-Blog: Super Powers 25th Anniversary

Well there is another Crisis on Earth Blog and being that I am a Plastic Man fan was asked to take part. I was all set to do so. However, at the time this was asked of me things were abit up in the air around my house. Also, I have never read the Super Powers series. Aside from an action figure I was told Plas was never in the mini-series. Even his action figure didn't have one of the mini comic books that the others came with. So I didn't know what to write about it. So I bowed out of the project. Still I want to provide links to those who stayed with the project. They are as follows:
Aquaman Shrine
Bat-Blog
Being Carter Hall
Crimson Lightning
Dispatches From the Arrow Cave
Doom Patrol
Firestorm Fan
Fortress of Baileytude
Idol-Head of Diabolu
Justice League Detroit
Love Dat Joker
...nurgh...
Once Upon A Geek
Speed Force
Good luck in this endevor guys. I know that one of the slogans of Crisis on Earth-Blog is "Blogs will live. Blogs will die." Don't think that my blogs have died. If you do another one I would like to be considered to participate.

What if...? #114 Secret Wars 25 Years Later

Photobucket

Every so often a story about Secret Wars would appear in "What if...?" This one was a bit of a puzzle as it asked what would have happened if none of them made it off Battleworld and had raised families. The story was to have taken place 25 years later. However, the publication was dated 1998. Only 14 years after the first issue of the Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars had come out.

Anyway the story starts with Balder, son of Thor and Enchantress, trying to lift his Fathers hammer on his 18th birthday. He can't but says one day he will. He is there with his friends Sarah (daughter of Captain America and Rogue) Mustang (son of Hawkeye and She Hulk) Firefly (son of Human Torch and Wasp) Torent (daughter of Storm and Wolverine) Later they arrive at a surprise party for Balder.
Meanwhile, at Dr.Dooms castle he and his son Malefactor, who is also the son of Enchantress making him Balder's evil half-brother. Enchantress left Thor for Doom but Doom later killed her.
Doom is trying to groom Malefactor to take over Earth when they return. Malefactor doesn't want to wait that long. He wants to take over Battleworld and kills his Father thinking that he is in the way. Then he bands together the children of the villains to take over the world. He tries to recruit Balder but that was his mistake. He wouldn't join and now the heroes are alerted.
They invade Castle Doom. While there Malefactor is beating Balder. Others are are also attacking the older heroes on the outside. In the castle the hammer of Thor burst in and surprised Malefactor. It also surprised Balder as it isn't his Dad. It is Sarah Rogers. She was worthy of lifting the hammer and also has her Dad's old shield. They have Malefactor on the run till Dr. Doom appears. He didn't die but just teleported himself away. He takes Malefactor to discipline him. The young avengers win.
They meet with their parents. Suddenly the Hulk shows up. He had left after the war and had not been seen in 20 years. He was thinking about how they can get back to Earth. He figures out how to do it with Thor's hammer and 30th century equipment from the now deceased Kang. But the Watcher appears. The kids never met him so they tell them he only appears if something bad is about to happen.
The kids ignore this warning and later that night Sarah uses the hammer with the equipment that the Hulk built. The appear on Earth. They start to go back till they see hundreds of Sentinels over New York and the city on fire. Torrent remembers how Professor X told her that when he left Earth mutants were hated. Maybe this is what that hatred turned into and this maybe what the Watcher warned them about. They want to return to their parents but now believe this is their destiny. To save this world from the Sentinels.

Need New Space

Does anyone know a site where I can store my photos? Blogger tells me I am close to the limit so I switched to photobucket. Now they are telling me the same. Both sites suggest that I pay for an upgrade but I can't afford that. Does anyone know of a site that gives unlimited space? If not I may have to stop blogging or cut back on all of my blogs.

Secret Wars Toys

Over at Wikipedia I read that Jim Shooter said that Secret Wars may not have come about if if hadn't been for Mattel. Kenner was successful with DC action figures. Mattel wanted to work with Marvel but only if they staged a publishing event. He said the fans always wrote in to have every Marvel hero battle every Marvel villain. They decided to do that. Mattel suggested the title contain the word "secret" as they thought kids responded well to it. With that the title became Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars.

The first series of action figures contained Captain America, Spider-man, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Iron Man, Wolverine, Kang and Dr. Octopus. It sold very well.

The second series contained Spidey in his new black costume, Daredevil, Falcon, Hobgoblin and Baron Zemo. Sales started to slow down.

The third series contained only Iceman, Electro, and Constrictor. If you live in the USA and never saw these in your store there is a reason for that. Sales was so slow that Mattel only sold them overseas.

Still the series was such a success that they were able to get other licensed merchandise to promote it. There were Stickers, Coloring books ,activity books and lunch boxes. Secret Wars was a rainmaker for Marvel Comics.

This Could Change Everything

When I was just a teen and I started writing my own stories I read that if a person creates any form of art or literature on his own time and he isn't employed by a company then he is the one who owns the copyright. When I heard that the creators of Superman created him before working for DC I was puzzled. How can DC say they own the copyright? I didn't worry about it as that was for greater legal minds then I to figure out. Well it seems that is getting closer to getting settled. Not in favor of DC I might add according to Variety. Sadly his creators are deceased but it will help out the family of Jerry Siegel. They won the rights to the newspaper strips and the early Action Comics. Any movies based on Superman using his origins needs to be be in production before 2011. That is going to be cutting it close. DC would probably waste time defending themselves in a lawsuit that they may loose.

Power Man Ad

Photobucket

WOW! I had to show this 1973 in house ad. I didn't know that Marvel did any ads for Power Man. This was the first time that I saw it. So here is a 20th Century ad from 1973 that was out when I started my comic book career. Buying not creating. Now here it is 2009 in the 21st Century and I am seeing it for the first time.

What if Marvel's Bullpen couldn't create new characters?

Photobucket

I was looking at this issue earlier today. I thought about posting it but it got me to wondering. Of course in this issue it asked what if the Marvel Bullpen became the FF. Then I started to think how Stan started Marvel's comeback in the business. The FF was his answer to DC's JLA. Later after creating other characters he had them join to form the Avengers which was really Marvel's JLA. Then I started to wonder what would have happen to Marvel if Stan and company had no idea what characters to create? Would they have brought back the old WWII heroes? The Avengers May have been Captain America, Namor, Human Torch, Whizzer, Miss. America. The X-Men may have been Jack Frost, Blue Diamond, Red Raven and Destroyer.
If they had gone that route would they have been as successful? Maybe but I kind of doubt it. If they could not get good ideas for new characters then I doubt they would have good ideas for stories. One thing that readers hate are boring plots.

DC Editorial Meeting

Photobucket
From Plop here is a brief look into an early 70's DC Comics editorial meeting.
