Here is the opening to a regular series from the 80's. I never watched it but I remember it from the ads. The Thing was a modern day teenage boy who transformed into the Thing. I don't know if he would go back in time to meet Fred and Barney or if a half an hour was for the Thing and the other half hour was for Fred and Barney.
The quality is bad but worth a look.
