1965 Spirit Ad

How many of us got our first look at the Spirit in Harvey Comics? It was the first time I saw him. Here is a 1965 in house ad for his adventures at that company. Now he is a DC character just like Plastic Man and many of his other Quality comics friends.

Underoos commercial from 1978

Everytime I saw commercials like this where most of them are DC characters I always wondered why they only showed one Marvel character. Usually, as in this commercial it is Spider-man.

Batman: the Brave and the Bold in Aquaman's Outrageous Adventure!

Last Friday's Batman: the Brave and the Bold was wonderful as always. This was in the campy style of fun from the 1960's Batman show. Complete with Aquaman calling Batman his "old chum."
It starts off serious in the teaser with back in time and teaming with Enemy Ace to get rid for an alien race that was trying to decide the winner of WWII.
Soon it switches to Aquaman in an undersea adventure. He defeats his old enemy the Fisherman when he finds out that he has really started daydreaming to escape what is a boring family vacation. He promised Mera and his son that he would stop from any superheroics.
However, every chance he gets he sneaks away to help out other DC heroes. First he contacts Batman to see if he needs any help. Batman is fighting the Penguin but says he can handle it and Aquaman should enjoy his vacation. But he is restless and finds Green Arrow and goes to help him fight the Clock King. At this point they do a title sequence with Aquaman and Green Arrow for their team up segment. After their adventure he gets back to the diner where he left his family who he hopes didn't notice he was gone. They have just finished eating their Apple pie but his is untouched. An out of breath Arthur arrives sits down and takes a bite and says "...umm Apple." Then he smiles.
Later he breaks away and helps Blue Beetle defeat Planet Master. As always Aquaman is about to name the adventure but is stopped by Blue Beetle. Beetle ask if he may have the honor. Aquaman says he can but just as Beetle is about to Aquaman steps in and names it. He gets back into his motorhome, obviously this version of Aquaman doesn't need to be back in the water ever hour, tells Beetle to stop by if ever in Atlantis and goes back to his family vacation.
Later that night his adventure with Beetle is on the news and Mera is mad. He vows to not stop to fight crime for the rest of his family vacation. As they travel we see the map view of where they are passing through. Past Smallville, Central City, Fawcett City, Keystone City, etc. they go. I didn't know all those towns and cities were so close. In each place he sees his freinds fighting crime. Red Tornado fights the Top and Green Lantern takes on Dr. Polaris. None seem to need his help.
Suddenly he gets a call from Batman. At first he thinks he is talking to Batman but then he hears that he is listening in on a call from Batman where Batman is in trouble and Penguin is telling how he will kill Batman. Aquaman is in a spot. He can't let Batman die but he can't break his word to his family. So on there travels he makes a stop in Gotham. He acts like it is just part of the vacation but rolls up the windows and tells his family to stay in the van. Instead they follow him and all are captured and put in the same danger as Batman.
As Penguin continues with his evil plans Mera tells Aquaman to "Show him why you are king of the sea." Aquaman calls on somw nearby crabs. They bring Batman his utility belt and he uses it to free them all and, after another title sequence, Batman and the Aquaman family attack Penguin and his henchmen. Tempest says it is the best vacation ever. Batman takes after Penguin ine the Batboat and Aquaman swims after them. They meet Penguin on his sub and save the world from Penguin and his missles. Aquaman says he will continue with the family vacation as promised. His family has changed their mind. Saving the world was more fun to them then the vacation.
Don't you just love a happy ending? PS I got the above picture from Aquaman Shrine.

Sugar Free Spider-Man

In 1978 Marvel leased out their characters to a company that put them on wrapers for sugar free gum. I love things like this were we see the normally serious superheroes being more friendly and poking fun at themselves. Here is one with the Marvel Team-Up star Spider-Man.
