Plastic Man Fan Art.

I recently quit running my Plastic Man site and have been deleating some post as that makes more room on blogspot for my other sites. But some I can't bear to get rid of. This is one of them. Artist Keelan Parham told me that he liked my Plastic Man site and it inspired him to create the artwork that you see above. I was granted permisson to post it on that site so I hope he doesn't mind that I post it here since that site is sloly going away. You can see it on his site and more like it if you click here.

Batman:The Brave and the Bold: Gorillas in our Midst

Well it happens to every show. Last week it happened to Batman:the Brave and the Bold. They delivered a clunker. At least I thought it was but I have never been a fan of Gorilla Grodd and Detective Chimp. But if you missed it from last week here it is called "Gorillas in our Midst."

Charlie Brown was a superhero

Tales From the Dollar Bin: The New Millie the Model #169

Recently I stopped running my character based blogs. One of them was for Millie the Model. It was Marvel's longest running humor book. It ran from 1945 to 1973 for an impressive 28 year run. It had 5 spin off books. They were Modeling with Millie, A Date with Millie, Life with Millie, Mad About Millie and Chili. The last one was centered around Millie's rival for modeling jobs and boyfriends. For most of the time it was humor based but for a while it was a romance book. That was from 1963 to 1967. After 1967 it went back to being a humor book. This issue is fom that period in 1969. Hope you enjoy it.

Charlie Brown Was A Superhero

Yes it looks like he was a superhero called Captain Lad and not a very good one at that. Here he is answering his hot line to the Mayor.

Sixties In House DC Subscription Ad

I know in 1966 Batman was huge on TV and comics. So it isn't surprising that DC used characters from the Batman books to sell their subscriptions. But if you are going to use the Riddler's catch phrase, why are you using the Penguin?

An Issue In History

The above issue of Action Comics, number 459, is historically important. Why? Because it and the other books published that time of the year in 1976 were the first to carry the UPC code. I don't know what comic book was the first printed with it that month but I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the one. It was the first book to use Superman after all. A system to keep track of items had been propsed in the 1930's and had been in various stages of production since. In 1974 most items had them on the product. The first item to be scaned with a UPC code was a pack of Wrigley's gum. There were other times in the persons cart that had the code on them but the cashier grabbed the gum first. A pack of Wrigley's gum is on display in the Smithsonian because of that choice.
You would think that the world had greeted it with open arms with how widely used as it is today. In fact most people I know hated it. Most still do. It's ugly and takes up space. Churches were saying it was a step in direction of the mark of the Anti-christ coming to power. Despite the public saying they didn't like it or want it we were forced to live with it. It still marks up the comic book covers to this day.

Batman and Plastic Man Vs. Rubberneck

Here is a toy of the animated Brave and the Bold series with Batman and Plastic Man fighting Rubberneck. I only saw it at this site. The only stores I saw were based in England and Ireland. Maybe some will be found in stores in the USA but I haven't seen them.

Champion Sports #1

Today is the opening day of the 2010 baseball season. While I am not a sports fan most of the men in my faily are and the start of a new season of Baseball was something my Dad always looked forward to. In 1972 and 1973 the 2 bigs teams were the Cincinnati Reds and the Oakland A's. My Dad and I would always root for the Reds in the World Series or any team that representated the National League. But the sad fact is that in 1972 the Reds lost the World Series to the Oakland A's. When this book was published by DC Comics the A's were the team everyone was talking about and the team to beat. While I loved all the stories in this book my favorite was the first one called "The Kid Who Beat the Oakland A's." No feelings of revenge there at all I just liked the story. It was also the dream of even the marginal baseball fan to suddenly discover they could play the game better then most people. Read the story and see if you don't notice anything similar in this 1973 story to the movie Rookie of the Year from 1993.
