Hawk and Dove #'s 1 and 2

I have been taking my good sweet time in my comic book reading lately. I say that so there will be no surprise to you when I say I just finished reading Hawk and Dove #’s 1 and 2. I have been a fan of the Hawk and the Dove since their early days in the sixties. I am a huge fan of the original Dove, Don Hall. I never have been a big fan of the Hawk. So whenever the legacy of Don Hall is mentioned I love hearing it. In issue 1 and in others it would seem that his legacy will be a big part of this series as they dig deep into the backstory of the Hawk and the Dove. We first get a sense of this after the Hawk and the Dove keep a plan from crashing in Washington DC. Hank tells his Dad that he still isn’t happy with the new Dove. It took her too long to stop the plane. He says Don would have done it faster and gotten in the back to join the fight. His Dad tells him that Don was a fine man and died a hero and quickly changes the subject to Hank getting back into college. Later Dove is talking to her boyfriend, Deadman, and says that she never told Hawk where she came from. She just one day showed up to work with him as the new Dove. She hints that Hank must never know her connection to Don.

Now that had me hooked. How is she connected to Don. Is she is old girlfriend, wife, daughter? What?

So far I like this series but it isn’t without its problems. First off I don’t remember Judge Hall knowing of their adventures as superheroes. Whenever I saw him in the book he was always against the superhero type of vigilante justice.

Now I know I didn’t get to read every issue of the Flashpoint series so I obviously missed something with Deadman. I know he was now back to life and it seemed like he was heading toward a relationship with Dove. However, I don’t recall him dying and becoming a ghost again. Must have been in an issue I missed.

Another thing I didn’t like was calling the series Hawk and Dove. I know this is nit-picking but I prefer calling them The Hawk and The Dove. It just sounds better.

Finally, and I am probably alone in this, I don’t like Rob Liefeld as the artist. I never have cared for his art. He always draws the bodies too big and the heads too small for the bodies he draws. He didn’t do that with the heads in this series but he still drew the Hawk’s body too big.

I did like the new villains Condor and Swan. Of course they are the way Hawk and Dove would be if they were evil.

When they killed off Dove in Crisis I couldn’t believe it. I always wished it was Hawk. Maybe they will bring back Don Hall one day but he had better not changed that much. Last thing I want to see is a grim and gritty Dove. If that is the direction they take Don is better off dead and a distant memory.
